Following the film we made, Interrupt the Pipeline (2008), students decided to create a program to replace the displaced all over the world.  A student from a Champaign alternative school suggested the name, a student from Chicago suggested the social engine, and the rest as they say is history… Well not quite.

Project MAROONS Inc. pairs struggling high school readers with at level readers and trains them in balanced literacy techniques. These students are then assigned proteges at the elementary level and facilitate balanced literacy methods at the assessed level of the student.

The entire program utilizes intensive and occasional mentoring tactics as the literacy program is promoted and monitored through web based technology. In exchange for aiding in helping augment the literacy levels of younger students, older students are provided with a host of academic and social opportunities and support, through a monitored extensive social engine exclusively designed for mentoring.

We train emergent and at-level high school readers to facilitate balanced, leveled literacy with younger students. In exchange for their hard work, older students are provided with a host of academic and social opportunities and support through a closely monitored, extensive social networking engine exclusively designed for mentoring. Additionally, the communities in which M.A.R.O.O.N.S. mentors live are encouraged to create specific groups on the social engine to help mentor, tutor, and apprentice their dedicated high school students.

Project M.A.R.O.O.N.S. INC is a five step holistic mentoring project. To view these steps, please click on the “Process” tab at the top of this page.
